Social Issue Art Progress

This is the progress in my art assignment. I cut out words that say RACISM and printed them backwards to that when I press them on the ink they will appear normal to read. I painted a spot red a d pressed the words onto the painted canvas.

Social Issue Art Preliminaries

These are some of the preliminaries I've done before my good painting. I was trying out a new rubbing technique where you paint a square then press a pictures upside down on it. The ink will stick to the paint and the paper will rub off.

Neil Gaiman's Speech

The video of Neil Gaiman giving a speech is a very interesting video. It is of him presenting a speech to a bunch of graduating students. The main idea of his speech is about art and a little bit of his life story. His speech was funny and inspiring and it was really well presented. He explains to the graduates that it is okay to make mistakes, it is okay to have no idea what you're doing. One thing that really stuck out to me in his speech is that it is okay to fail. You are not a failure if you fail at doing something.

"A freelance life, a life in the arts, is sometimes like putting messages in bottles, on a desert island, and hoping that someone will find one of your bottles and open it and read it, and put something in a bottle that will wash its way back to you: appreciation, or a commission, or money, or love. And you have to accept that you may put out a hundred things for every bottle that winds up coming back." - Neil Gaiman

Something he kept repeating was "make good art, in bad times and in good times, make good art". This saying describes that you should make art if you're feeling down or happy. "Make good art, in good times and bad times" because art is about expressing one's feelings and emotions. When there is a meaning for why you are creating art then that is when the best art is made.

Social Issue Artwork

This is kind of an outline example of what my artwork is based off of. I don't know made it. The artwork is of a bunch of faces mixed into one art piece. Mine won't have as many faces so you will be able to see more clear of what the artwork is of. I got my inspiration from this artwork. My artwork will include other materials that I will experiment with first. I am excited to see the materials I use and to see how it turns out. I hope my artwork doesn't look like a mash up of faces, so the faces can be identified easily. I want my artwork to be clear instead of  having people guess at what it is.

Clay Mug Completed

This is my finished product of my clay mug assignment. I think it looks alright. I probably should have took more time into sanding it so it was smoother. I think my final product looks good enough! I like how it turned out, although I kind of think it looks like a penguin instead of an owl!

Clay Mug Almost Finished

The fist picture is my mug after it has been fired for the first time. It is just a plain clay mug. The second and third pictures is my mug with the glaze on it. It looks dull and not very good. After it is fired for the second time the glaze will become glossy and the colors with be vivid. I hope I put enough oats of glaze on to make it look good.

Clay Mug Process

This is my clay mug going into the kiln. It sits in here while the kiln goes to a high temperature and "bakes" or "cooks" it. The actual term for this is called "firing" it. After my mug comes out and is done being fired I can sand and paint it. My mug will almost be done then. As you can see on the picture a few other kid's mugs are being fired for the second time after they're painted it.
